You weren’t expecting this, were you little girl?
You spent so long fantasising about it, wondering what it might be like, that you never really thought about what it would really be like, how it would actually play out. You didn’t expect it would be like this, that it would ever feel this real.
You idly wonder about dragons, think about how impressive and terrible they would be, how there would be a horrific majesty to how they fly, how they can spew flames from their mouths like angry bile. But you’re protected by a veneer of fantasy, knowing that it’s the safe kind of monster, something that isn’t going to break through into your reality.
I was a dragon in your head, once. Something safe, one step removed from the actuality of your life. But I broke through the fourth wall, and now I’m here, leathery wings buffeting you, flames licking at my lips. And you don’t know what to do. You don’t know whether to run and hide, or stand and fight. Your eyes are wide, your jaw slack, and you’re terrified. You weren’t expecting… this.
I’m going to devour you, throw you onto my treasure and guard you with that horrible majesty. You’re going to be overwhelmed, and utterly, completely powerless to resist. You’re going to be surprised, and you’ll learn, slowly, of what to expect. But right now?
Right now you have no idea.
In the fantasies of childhood …
There were dragons …
Fire and fierceness …
Friends of the darkness …
Guarding its door …
In the fantasies of now …
There is only one dragon …
Still fire and fierceness …
Lord of the darkness …
And key to all doors …
